Our First Day at DoubleTree by Hilton Fiji – Is This Resort Worth It?

Crystal-clear waters, warm Fijian hospitality, and one of the best hotel breakfasts we’ve had in years. Here’s what our first full day at the DoubleTree by Hilton Fiji – Sonaisali Island was really like.

After a last-minute change of plans, we found ourselves waking up in paradise.

Our original travel plans had been thrown into chaos after flight cancellations, but rather than wait months to see family again, we made a spontaneous decision that turned out to be one of our best yet—meet in Fiji.

That unexpected change brought us to the DoubleTree by Hilton Fiji – Sonaisali Island, a beachfront resort just outside Nadi, and after spending our first full day exploring everything it had to offer, we can safely say this place made an incredible first impression.

If you’re wondering whether this luxury resort is worth booking for your own Fiji holiday, here’s everything we experienced on day one.

A Warm Fijian Welcome (And That Famous Hilton Cookie)

We arrived fairly late the previous evening after a long day of travel.

By the time we checked in, we were more interested in getting some sleep than exploring the resort—but one tradition couldn’t be missed.

Every guest is welcomed with the famous DoubleTree warm chocolate chip and walnut cookie, and yes… it’s every bit as good as people say.

It’s a small touch, but after a day of airports and flights, it instantly made us feel welcome.

After a quick dinner, we headed straight to bed, excited to wake up and finally see the resort in daylight.

First Impressions of Sonaisali Island

The next morning, the sunshine showed us exactly why people love Fiji.

Before breakfast we wandered through the resort grounds, taking in the palm trees, beachfront views and beautifully maintained gardens.

The resort immediately gives off peaceful tropical island vibes.

Although Sonaisali Island is only a short drive and boat transfer from Nadi International Airport, it feels wonderfully secluded.

If you’re looking for somewhere to completely switch off for a few days, this place certainly starts ticking those boxes from the moment you arrive.

Breakfast at Vulani Restaurant

One thing we always judge a resort on is breakfast.

Fortunately, DoubleTree Fiji absolutely delivered.

Breakfast is served each morning in Vulani Restaurant, and the buffet offered an impressive variety of both international and local-inspired dishes.

There were:

  • Fresh pastries and breads
  • Toast station
  • Seasonal fruit
  • Cereals and yoghurts
  • Fresh juices
  • Made-to-order egg station
  • Traditional hot breakfast favourites
  • Indian dishes
  • Congee with toppings
  • Fresh coffee machines

One thing you’ll quickly notice when travelling around Fiji is the strong Indian influence on the local cuisine.

The Indian community has played an important role in Fiji’s history, and you’ll find delicious curries, rotis and vegetarian dishes almost everywhere you go.

Breakfast here reflected that perfectly.

My personal favourite was the spiced vegetarian roti, which was packed with flavour.

Mackenzie couldn’t stop talking about the chickpea and potato cakes served with chutney and raita.

Everything tasted incredibly fresh, the pastries were excellent, and even the coffee—despite coming from a machine—was surprisingly good.

Combined with the incredibly friendly staff and beautiful ocean views from the restaurant, it easily ranked among the best resort breakfasts we’ve had in quite some time.

A Relaxing Morning by the Pool

After breakfast there was really only one thing left to do.

Relax.

We spent the morning by the resort’s large swimming pool overlooking the ocean.

This ended up becoming exactly what we’d hoped our Fiji holiday would be—a chance to slow down and enjoy island life.

There was no rush.

No strict itinerary.

Just sunshine, warm weather and a beautiful setting.

Sometimes that’s exactly what you need from a tropical holiday.

Fresh Coconuts and Sustainable Touches

Following our swim, we grabbed a couple of fresh coconuts to cool down.

One small detail we really appreciated was the resort’s commitment to sustainability.

Instead of traditional plastic straws, all drinks were served with biodegradable rice and starch-based straws.

It’s a simple initiative, but one that helps reduce plastic waste while maintaining the guest experience.

It’s always encouraging to see resorts taking practical steps towards becoming more environmentally responsible.

When Tropical Weather Changes Everything

Of course, this is Fiji.

Beautiful sunshine can quickly give way to tropical showers.

By early afternoon the wind had picked up and dark clouds rolled across the island.

Rather than fight the weather, we headed back to our room for a while and waited for the rain to pass.

One thing we’ve learnt travelling through the South Pacific is that these short tropical storms rarely last very long.

Sure enough, before too long patches of blue sky were already beginning to appear again.

If you’re visiting Fiji, don’t let a little rain ruin your day.

It’s simply part of island life.

One of the Most Memorable Activities of the Day

The weather clearing gave us the chance to experience something we weren’t expecting.

One of the resort’s daily cultural activities was a traditional Fijian singing session.

We asked if we could join in, and one of the local staff members—whom everyone affectionately called “Uncle”—brought out his guitar.

Before long we were all singing together.

Then more staff members joined in.

It quickly became one of the highlights of the entire day.

Music is deeply woven into Fijian culture.

Whether you’re arriving at a resort, attending a ceremony or simply sharing time together, singing seems to naturally become part of the experience.

It’s warm.

It’s genuine.

And it’s something we always look forward to every time we visit Fiji.

Moments like this are impossible to recreate in a brochure—they’re simply something you have to experience for yourself.

Tropical Drinks Done Right

As the afternoon continued, we settled back into holiday mode.

Mackenzie ordered a Virgin Piña Colada, while I opted for an iced mocha.

Both were excellent.

Combined with the fresh coconuts we’d enjoyed earlier, it made for a perfect lazy afternoon by the pool.

If you’re planning a relaxing resort stay rather than a sightseeing-packed itinerary, this is exactly the sort of day Sonaisali Island does incredibly well.

Family Reunion in Fiji

The entire reason we had come to Fiji was finally about to happen.

My parents were arriving later that afternoon.

Because of the flight cancellations, this spontaneous trip became the easiest way for us to spend time together rather than waiting until sometime next year.

Seeing them arrive made the whole journey worthwhile.

Sometimes the best holidays aren’t about ticking off attractions—they’re simply about spending quality time with the people you care about.

Dinner at Vulani Restaurant

Originally we’d planned to eat dinner at Tavu Bar & Grill, but because of the afternoon rain the outdoor dining area had been closed.

Instead, we headed back to Vulani Restaurant, where there was both an à la carte menu and an Indian-themed buffet.

Once again, the Indian cuisine impressed us.

Mackenzie chose the buffet and thoroughly enjoyed the variety of dishes on offer.

My parents ordered from the à la carte menu.

The steak sandwich received excellent reviews, while the pan-fried fish was another standout.

Dessert finished the evening perfectly.

Mum enjoyed a rich chocolate mousse, while Mackenzie and I sampled a selection of traditional Indian sweets.

It was a relaxed, enjoyable meal and the perfect way to finish our first full day in Fiji.

Is DoubleTree Fiji Worth It?

After just one day, our answer is leaning strongly towards yes.

What stood out most wasn’t just the beautiful location.

It was the combination of thoughtful hospitality, excellent food, peaceful surroundings and genuine cultural experiences that made the resort feel special.

Highlights from our first day included:

  • One of the best resort buffet breakfasts we’ve had
  • Beautiful beachfront pool with ocean views
  • Friendly and welcoming staff
  • Authentic Fijian cultural activities
  • Sustainable initiatives around the resort
  • Excellent dining options
  • Relaxed island atmosphere

Most importantly, it gave us exactly what we’d hoped for—a chance to slow down, reconnect with family and simply enjoy being in Fiji.

And this was only day one.

With two more nights still to come, we couldn’t wait to see what the rest of our Fiji adventure had in store.
